What We Send Home
An envelope inside a winter coat leads Imani to a charity roof that was never finished. Eight connected episodes follow the records, relationships, and costly choices behind a family’s reputation for generosity.
Synopsis
A coat meant for a Toronto winter reaches Imani Reid in Kingston's heat. Its pocket holds an instruction from her aunt: compare the paperwork before calling Winston.
Winston Reid moves the family’s freight, finds work for its men, and helps repair its homes. He also manages the Jamaica spending for a small overseas roof-repair fund. When Imani visits one of the supposed beneficiaries, the accounts and the house do not match. Her mother’s signature is on the form saying otherwise.
As objects emerge from the barrels—a pressure cooker, a schoolbag, a sewing machine—the family’s explanations begin to unravel. In Toronto, Imani’s cousin Tessa faces demands to amend old records. In Kingston, her brother depends on Winston for work, her estranged father has kept a warning nobody wanted to read, and a widow is tired of being told she should be grateful.
Across eight episodes, What We Send Home follows Imani’s attempt to establish what happened without editing her own family out of it. The money matters. So does the price of finally asking where it went.
