Short story
Carnival Lost and Found
What the Fire Left
A wire bird found in a damaged bat costume leads Rhea towards Nessa, the partner she lost after a workshop fire. Over eleven days before Carnival Tuesday, repairs and difficult conversations reveal what each woman has carried from that night.
About this story
Rhea Sookram has a new shop, too many urgent repairs and a photograph she keeps where the light cannot quite reach it. Nessa Baptiste, her former creative partner, survived their workshop fire but stopped answering Rhea’s calls. When a copper bird drops out of an old costume, Rhea begins tracing the salvage that scattered their work across the city.
The trail brings no convenient message from Nessa. Instead, Rhea meets people with their own reasons to hide, return or remake something precious. A performer must decide how much of himself to show. A daughter discovers the choices her mother never described. A young apprentice learns that the person wearing a costume should have the final word.
Then Nessa agrees to meet. Her account challenges the story Rhea has told herself about the missing year, while a photograph and a reluctant witness raise new questions about the fire. With Carnival approaching and a powerful sponsor still using their work, Rhea must choose what she can honestly repair—and what she must let change.
Eight complete episodes resolve the season’s central mysteries, carrying the ensemble from a crowded cutting table to a Carnival day they can finally share.
