Short story
The Second Wedding
Room for Another
Eight second weddings draw Mara and Ellis closer, until a London partnership forces them to decide what starting over can actually mean.
About this story
A memorial chair on a Brooklyn rooftop introduces Mara Baptiste to Ellis Cole, a wedding planner who asks inconveniently useful questions. A garden portrait, a London remarriage and two Toronto brides bring them into a working partnership that soon becomes personal.
Back in Trinidad, Mara lets herself enjoy an evening without securing its future first. But Ellis’s delayed disclosure of a London career decision exposes the habits both learned in their previous marriages. Attraction alone will not bridge the distance.
Room for Another follows eight ceremonies from March to November, ending at the wedding of Mara’s own mother. The season resolves Mara and Ellis’s immediate relationship through a candid, practical choice, while giving every wedding couple a ceremony and emotional payoff of their own.
