The Unclaimed Drawer

Short story

The Unclaimed Drawer

A Place in the Picture

A camcorder, a concealed brother, and two visits to Vancouver force Andre to discover what his father's silence left behind.

About this story

An old birthday recording puts Cedric Hylton in Grace's Vancouver kitchen in 1996. For his son Andre, it is impossible footage—until Grace names a brother he never knew his father had.

Across eight device returns and family encounters, A Place in the Picture traces a marina accident, a departure, and a later attempt to return. Andre must ask permission, wait for answers, and resist using each new fact to restore the father he thought he knew. The central mystery closes with an account of the visits and the estrangement. What follows is a quieter choice about the people still present, the shop he may take over, and a future that need not remain temporary.
