Short story
The Apology Shop
The Night We Kept Quiet
An old concert programme draws Inez back to a missing brooch, a cruel song and the pupil left carrying the blame. Saying sorry will be the beginning.
About this story
A young baker wants an apology that wins an argument. A grandfather needs to explain a missing instrument. A widower hopes to say, too late, what he should have said at home. At her desk in a Bridgetown print shop, Inez Holder helps each customer find a way through.
Then an old school concert programme brings back Ruth Clarke, the sixteen-year-old Inez accused of theft in front of a crowded hall. The story did not end when the concert did. It travelled into other rooms, other decisions and a life Inez never followed.
Across eight connected episodes, every attempt at repair brings Inez closer to her own unfinished apology. To correct the past, she must stop controlling the conversation—and accept that the woman Ruth became owes her nothing.
