In the heart of the whispering woods, under the glow of a crescent moon, Lena stumbled upon a clearing she had never seen before. The air buzzed with a strange magic, a silent hum that seemed to call out to her very soul. At the center of the clearing stood an ancient, gnarled tree, its bark shimmering with ethereal light.

Lena, a curious and brave young woman from the nearby village, had ventured into these woods many times, but tonight, something felt different. She reached out, her fingers brushing against the cool, pulsating bark, and the tree whispered secrets long forgotten.

As the wind carried the whispers away, Lena noticed something buried at the foot of the tree. It was an old, leather-bound book, its cover adorned with symbols that seemed to dance in the moonlight. She felt a pull towards the book, an urge to open it and uncover its mysteries.

But as she reached for the book, the ground beneath her trembled, and a faint path illuminated by a soft, blue glow appeared, leading deeper into the woods. Torn between the allure of the ancient book and the mysterious path, Lena stood at the brink of making a decision that would change her life forever.

  • D. G. James is an author dedicated to bringing the untold stories, settings, and complexities of Jamaican life into the worlds of psychological thrillers, urban drama, and speculative fiction. His creative journey began as a teenager in Jamaica, sparked by a history assignment that challenged him to imagine the lived reality of a young man captured into the Middle Passage. This early fascination with the internal human experience stayed with him as he later moved to the U.S. and entered the military.

It was during his active-duty service in 1999 that James finally put pen to paper for his first major project a story titled The Martian Chronicles, which would ultimately evolve into his published work, The Red Myths. While his military background provides a foundation of technical realism and jargon for his world-building, his true passion lies in centering Jamaican characters and situations in genres where they are rarely seen.

Whether he is navigating the grit of urban drama or the mind-bending tension of a psychological thriller, James writes to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and modern storytelling. Beyond his fiction, he produces self-help literature designed to help readers reclaim and master their own personal narratives.

This is a great story! I love the way you introduce the two contrasting choices that lay before the protagonist, and the sense of mystery that makes you want to find out what happens next.

This creepy story is not for the faint of heart. The dark forest path is full of suspense and fear, and the reader can feel the protagonist’s terror as they are drawn deeper into the woods.

The contrast between left and right in the story is fascinating. In the dark forest path, fear and terror await, while in meadow, tranquility reigns supreme.

I disagree with the idea that choosing the right path always leads to a positive outcome. Sometimes, facing our fears in the dark forest can bring about unexpected growth and strength.

Of course the bright and inviting meadow is where you’ll find peace and tranquility. That’s not at all predictable.

Oh, look, another story about a fork in the road where one path is good and the other is evil. How original.

The protagonist should just follow the breadcrumbs like Hansel and Gretel. That always works out well, right?

The story highlights the importance of making choices and facing the consequences. The protagonist’s decision to venture into the dark forest could lead to either a horrifying end or a journey of self-discovery.

The duality of the paths in the story reflects the nature of existence itself. The dark forest represents the unknown and the potential for danger, while the bright meadow symbolizes hope and the possibility of something better.

I wonder what would have happened if the protagonist had chosen a different path. Would they have found a hidden treasure or encountered a wise old wizard?
