The last time we spoke, I told you about a book I was writing, but never the story. Because I’ve been sitting with this story longer than I expected, I want to make sure I did it right.

It didn’t start as a book I planned to release right away. The story is from an idea I had years ago, which I titled “Life in the Eyes of Michelle Lewis“. I had it tucked away until about a year ago, when I re-read the synopsis. Instantly, a question I thought would lead me to the full story was: what happens when the life you’re trying to escape keeps reaching out and pulling you back?

That question led to the final development of Michelle’s story. It ended up being about pressure. The kind that builds before anyone notices. It’s also about what happens when opportunity shows up, but it comes with strings tied to people who expect loyalty, silence, and sacrifice in return.

I didn’t want to write a story about easy heroines or clean choices. I wanted to write about that moment when you realize no one is coming to save you, and if they do, would you trust their intent? Ultimately, it makes you question that whatever happens next will be because of the decision you make.

If you’ve ever felt like your future was being negotiated without your consent, this story will probably feel uncomfortably familiar. It’s not a comfort read. It’s a mirror for many who grew up in environments described in the story.

As a friend and fan, I wanted to share it with you before it is officially released. If this sounds like the kind of story you’d want to spend time with, you can find it here:

Thanks for taking the time to read this, whether you pick up the book or not.

P.S. This is a coming-of-age story, but not the kind that promises things will work out. It promises honesty.

  • D. G. James is an author dedicated to bringing the untold stories, settings, and complexities of Jamaican life into the worlds of psychological thrillers, urban drama, and speculative fiction. His creative journey began as a teenager in Jamaica, sparked by a history assignment that challenged him to imagine the lived reality of a young man captured into the Middle Passage. This early fascination with the internal human experience stayed with him as he later moved to the U.S. and entered the military.

It was during his active-duty service in 1999 that James finally put pen to paper for his first major project a story titled The Martian Chronicles, which would ultimately evolve into his published work, The Red Myths. While his military background provides a foundation of technical realism and jargon for his world-building, his true passion lies in centering Jamaican characters and situations in genres where they are rarely seen.

Whether he is navigating the grit of urban drama or the mind-bending tension of a psychological thriller, James writes to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and modern storytelling. Beyond his fiction, he produces self-help literature designed to help readers reclaim and master their own personal narratives.
