Being an author has taken me a long way. Because I am constantly seeking inspiration, I often gone on trips in the world’s most vibrant corners. My recent visit landed me at Hacienda del Cielo Modern Mexicano in Tokyo. It provided just the spark I was looking for. Perched on the 9th floor in the trendy Daikanyama district, this “House in the Sky” is where Tokyo’s sleek architecture meets the fiery spirit of Mexico.

I visited with my family and our dear friends—a Jamaican family who also calls Tokyo home. It was a beautiful crossroads of cultures: Jamaican warmth, Mexican flavor, and Tokyo’s unparalleled skyline as our backdrop.

The Atmosphere

The first thing that hits you is the sheer scale of the place. With 8-meter ceilings and a massive terrace overlooking the city, Hacienda del Cielo feels less like a restaurant and more like an elevated escape. It’s loud, vibrant, and incredibly friendly—exactly the kind of energy you want when dining with a large group of loved ones.

The Dining Experience

Our party opted for the set courses, which are a fantastic value and a great way to sample the breadth of the menu. However, my daughter and I decided to go rogue and order à la carte, which gave us a chance to explore some hidden gems on the menu.

  • For the Kids: My daughter kept it simple and satisfying with the Mexican Chicken Wings and a side of crispy fries. The wings had just enough zest to be interesting without being overwhelming for a younger palate.
  • The Pescatarian Route: As I don’t eat meat (only fish), I curated my own spread:
    • Chili Fries: A spicy, salty indulgence that was perfect for sharing.
    • Garlic Shrimp: These were succulent and hit those classic savory notes.
    • Swordfish Fajita: This was the star of the show. The swordfish was perfectly seared and served with all the traditional fixings, providing a meaty texture without the actual meat.

Pro-Tip for Vegetarians & Pescatarians: While I initially worried about the course menus, I realized mid-meal that I actually could have joined in on the “Standard Course” with everyone else. Most of the courses—like the Guacamole FrescoCeviche, and Cheese Quesadillas—are naturally meat-free. The only substitution needed would have been the final beef fajita!

  • Must Order: The Guacamole Fresco (prepared table-side) and the Swordfish Brochetta or Fajita if you are avoiding land-meat.
  • Kid-Friendly: Highly. The staff is welcoming to families, and the “sides” menu is a safe haven for pickier eaters.
  • Reservations: Absolutely essential. This place is a favorite for locals and expats alike, especially on weekends and clear evenings.

Dining at Hacienda del Cielo felt like a chapter out of a book I never want to end—vibrant, flavorful, and filled with the laughter of good friends.
